FAQ

  • Where is the Olive Oil produced?
The Segesta Olive Oil is grown, pressed and bottled in Calatafimi-Segesta Sicily. Calatafimi Segesta region, enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, less than seven miles from the sea and 340meters above sea level in western Sicily. The olive groves benefit from the proximity to the sea, this contributes to giving the olives their particular aroma and delicate flavor.
  • How are the olives grown?
Our olives are grown on a multi-generational family-run farm and are hand-selected at peak ripeness then pressed immediately to ensure critical freshness. Our farm groves operate with organic, sustainable and biodynamic principles.
  • What’s the Difference Between Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil?
Olive oil is made from pressing olives. Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form of olive oil. Due to this, it retains its natural antioxidants and vitamins, which are often lost during processing. This makes it a more healthful oil than regular olive oil but also makes it a little more expensive. The more refined an oil is, the less likely it is to have the health-giving benefits of olive oil. Only unrefined oils are rich in the vitamins, nutrients and disease-fighting compounds olive oil is known for. Extra virgin olive oil is unrefined and free from all additives or artificial processes. It is the highest grade of olive oil. When you buy organic olive oil that’s extra virgin, you are buying the highest available quality of olive oil.
  • What is Cold Press?
Cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil means the olives are crushed into a paste and then pressed to extract the oil. The entire process is temperature controlled to never exceed 80F. This means the inherent flavors—and health benefits of the oil are preserved for longer, ensuring our oil is as flavorful when it reaches your home as it was when it was pressed. Measures for Protecting and Preserving the Oil. Once the oil is made, it's all about protecting it from oxygen, which rapidly degrades flavor. We use special caps to limit the amount of oxygen entering the bottle.
  • How do we self-regulate?
We have voluntarily adopted the strictest physicochemical standards for our Extra Virgin oils – stricter than those required by law – to guarantee the freshness of our products throughout their entire life cycle.
  • Why do we use dark glass bottles?
Olive oil is a living product and as such is sensitive to temperature and light. Exposing it to light and heat may alter its natural properties and initiate a process of accelerated oxidation. In order to protect the product’s quality during its whole life cycle, we supply dark glass bottles for all our Extra Virgin Olive Oils.
  • Is the oil a non-GMO food?
Our extra virgin olive oils consist of only one ingredient. Naturally, we want it to be the finest ingredient – pure and simple. While all olives are a Non-GMO food, Segesta Oil Co. ensures that all of our products contain absolutely no genetically modified organisms.
  • What dishes should olive oil be used for?
Olive oil can be used in place of less healthy fats in practically every dish. Our oil can be used for poaching and baking to sautéing to deep-frying, substituting butter and seed oils for extra virgin olive oil is not only the healthiest option, but your foods will also taste better too.
  • How should I store my oil?
Keep it tightly closed in a cool, dark cupboard. Once you open the bottle, use it within a month or two.
